A good-looking SPC plank is not necessarily a well-made one. The color may be accurate, the surface finish may look clean and the overall thickness may meet the specification. Yet installation problems can still appear if the click-lock profile has not been machined correctly.
Inaccurate, chipped or inconsistent locking edges can make the planks difficult to connect. Visible gaps, uneven joints and loose connections may follow. For importers and distributors, these problems often lead to complaints, extra installation work and avoidable replacement costs.
This SPC flooring click-lock quality checklist explains what buyers should examine before approving samples or releasing a bulk shipment. It covers the locking profile, trial installation, finished joints, connection strength and consistency between production batches.

Why Click-Lock Quality Deserves Close Attention
Most SPC flooring is installed as a floating floor. The planks connect to each other rather than being fixed directly to the subfloor with nails. Much of the floor’s stability therefore depends on the accuracy of the locking edges.
When the click-lock system is poorly made, several problems may appear:
Planks are difficult to connect during installation
Tongues or locking lips break under normal installation force
Gaps remain visible after the planks are joined
One edge sits higher than the adjoining plank
Joints begin moving or separating during use
Installers report greater material wastage and slower installation
Profile design is only one part of the equation. Machining accuracy, core formulation, plank thickness, installation technique and subfloor condition can all affect the finished floor. Locking quality should therefore be assessed as part of the complete flooring system, not as an isolated detail.
1. Confirm Which Locking Profile Was Approved
“Click SPC flooring” is too general for a purchase specification. Different factories and product structures may use different profile designs. The required installation movement can also vary from one system to another.
Before production begins, the buyer and supplier should agree on a clear reference. This may be an approved physical sample, a profile drawing, a tooling number or another traceable specification.
The confirmation should cover:
The locking method used along the long side
The locking method used at the short end
The approved profile drawing, tooling number or physical sample
Any licensed locking-system requirement
The correct installation direction and angle
If a project specifically requires a licensed locking system, that condition should be written into the commercial and technical documents before the order is placed.
2. Inspect Both Sides of the Click-Lock Profile
Inspect both sides of the locking connection: the projecting tongue side and the receiving groove side. Check the entire length of each plank rather than looking at only one corner.
The locking edges should be clean, continuous and free from visible damage. Their shape should also remain consistent from one end of the plank to the other.
Common defects include:
Chipped, cracked or broken locking lips
Rough marks left by the machining process
Loose material or debris inside the groove
Incomplete or visibly deformed profiles
Changes in the depth or width of the locking edge
Damage caused during cutting, handling or packing
Even a small defect can prevent a plank from connecting correctly. Inspection samples should therefore be taken from several cartons. A display board or specially selected sample cannot represent an entire production order.
3. Test the Long Side and Short End Separately
Each SPC plank has locking edges along its long sides and at both short ends. These connections may use different shapes or installation movements. Testing only the long side can leave a short-end defect unnoticed.
During the check, make sure that:
The long-side profile engages smoothly
The short-end connection closes completely
Adjacent corners line up correctly
Normal installation does not require excessive force
The locking edge remains intact after connection
A connection that feels unusually tight should not automatically be considered stronger. Excessive resistance may indicate an inaccurate profile and can increase the risk of damaged locking edges during installation.
4. Carry Out a Multi-Plank Trial Installation
One of the quickest ways to uncover practical locking problems is to install a small test area. Joining only two planks is not enough. Some defects become visible only when several rows and multiple end joints are brought together.
The planks should be installed using the intended method. They should not be forced together simply to make the test area appear acceptable.
A useful trial installation should include:
Several full-size planks
At least two or three completed rows
Both long-side and short-end connections
Samples selected from different cartons
A flat, clean and stable test surface
Pay attention to how the connection feels during installation. Unexpected resistance, loose engagement, damaged corners or different behavior between cartons should all be recorded.
Trial installation is a practical inspection method, but it does not replace laboratory testing when the purchase specification requires a measured locking-strength result.
5. Look Closely at Gaps and Height Differences
Once the trial area has been assembled, inspect it under normal lighting and from more than one direction. Run a hand gently across the joints. A properly connected floor should look continuous and feel even.
Watch for the following signs:
Visible openings along the long-side joints
Short-end joints that do not close fully
Raised or lower edges between adjacent planks
Corners that do not align
Movement when light pressure is applied near a joint
A straightedge, feeler gauge or another suitable measuring tool can be used when written tolerances have been agreed. The acceptance criteria should match the relevant product standard, the approved sample and the buyer’s purchase specification.
6. Evaluate the Locking Strength
The finished connection must be secure enough to keep the planks together during normal use. If the lock releases too easily, gaps may develop. At the other extreme, an excessively tight profile can slow installation and damage the plank edges.
A manual check is useful for identifying an obviously loose or abnormal connection. It should not, however, be treated as a standardized strength result. Pulling two planks apart by hand does not provide a reliable numerical measurement.
When a buyer or project requires documented locking strength, the test method and acceptance value should be agreed before production. The specimen direction must also be stated.
Long-side and short-end results should be recorded separately because the two connections may have different profile designs and installation methods.
7. Do Not Judge the Lock by Thickness Alone
The locking profile is machined directly into the rigid SPC core. Its performance is therefore influenced by the thickness, density and consistency of that core.
A thicker plank may provide more space for a deeper profile. That does not mean every thick SPC floor automatically has a stronger or more accurate lock. Profile design, core formulation, tooling condition and machining control remain equally important.

8. Compare Samples from Different Production Batches
An approved pre-production sample establishes the expected structure and appearance. It does not guarantee that every carton in the bulk order will perform in exactly the same way.
Tool wear, production-line adjustments, material variation and handling conditions may affect the locking profile during a long production run. Sampling should therefore cover more than one production period.
Where practical, collect samples from:
Different times during the production run
Separate pallets or carton groups
More than one color when the same product structure is being produced
The beginning, middle and later stages of production when required
Each inspection finding should be connected to the relevant batch, pallet or carton information. If a problem is discovered, this traceability makes it easier to identify the affected products.
9. Put the Locking Requirements in Writing
Photographs and informal messages are useful during discussion, but they should not be the only record of an important product requirement. The approved locking details need to appear in the purchase order, technical specification or inspection plan.
The written document may specify:
The approved locking profile or physical sample reference
The long-side and short-end installation methods
The required trial-installation procedure
Acceptable joint appearance and height difference
The locking-strength test method, when required
Sampling and pre-shipment inspection requirements
